Fairies in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Fairies are a recurring race that appear throughout the Zelda series, helping Link in his quest to save Hyrule from Ganon. The reclusive beings are associated with nature and seldom seen by humans. They have many different roles in the series, from companions to deities and even items. Fairies are also often used as a symbol of luck in the series, which is why it is important for players to have a good supply of them.

In the current generation of consoles, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild features one of the most prominent roles for Fairies in the series, along with its main hero, Link. Players are able to capture and store Fairies in their inventory, allowing them to revive Link from death, or even to be used as weapons. This is a significant departure from the previous games, where fairies could only be found in dungeons and were locked behind gates that required a special item to open.

The new mechanic for capturing and holding fairies is a huge improvement over the previous one, and makes them an essential tool in the game. In addition to reviving Link from death, they can drop Fairy Dust, which can be used to amplify certain dishes or mixed with monster parts to create a Fairy Tonic. They can be caught using the Bug-Catching Net or in a Fairy Fountain. However, like other past games, they stop spawning once Link has obtained a certain number of them, to prevent overstocking.

Besides regular fairies, the game also features the Great Fairies of Hyrule, which are found in their own special Fountains around the world. Unlike the regular ones, these Great Fairies are reclusive and rarely seen by humans, but if a player happens to stumble upon one they can grant a wish — for a price of course. In Tears of the Kingdom, the Great Fairies function similar to those in Breath of the Wild, except that they can upgrade Link’s armor if they are given the correct amount of Spirit Gems.

There are four Great Fairies in the game, and they can be found by visiting a specific Fountain or by locating them on a map. However, players should keep in mind that each upgrade comes with a cost of both raw materials and rupees.

Aside from the Great Fairies, stray fairies are still an important part of the game, as they can be captured with the Bug-Catching Net or in their own Fountains. They can even be used as weapons in some dungeons. While Navi is replaced by Tatl, a new Fairy that reluctantly helps Link on his journey, the spry little creatures are still as important as ever.
